Nurturing Individuality and Creativity
My personal educational philosophy is based on nurturing the creativity and individuality of my students. I believe it is my responsibility to guide the student on their musical journey based on what their passions and experiences are, and to make music relevant to the student’s life. I implement this in my teaching by encouraging the student to communicate their personal interests and goals and allowing them some leeway in choosing their repertoire, and (where applicable) in choosing the genre of music they would like to learn.
Learning Styles
As a student who has always learned outside the box I understand that it is important to tailor my teaching to each student’s learning style. I understand the different types of learning styles and inquire about the student’s educational history to construct a method that fits the student’s learning style.
Respect is a pillar of my educational philosophy. Over the years I have noticed that I learn just as much from my students as they do from me, so I make it known that I believe in and respect my students’ musical opinions, ideas, and goals.
High Standards
I hold myself and my students to a high standard, not because perfection is important but because what is learned during the journey to reach those high standards is what makes us become true artists.
In general I believe the journey is as important or more important than the goal, the process is more important than the outcome, overcoming challenges is more important than success. This is because the work that we do to overcome challenges, to reach those high standards is what makes us who we are and the expression of who we truly are is the ultimate goal of the arts.
I specialize in teaching classical double bass, however I do teach a wide variety of styles and also teach electric bass lessons. I play and teach both French and German bows. Please contact me through the form on my contact page, or click here to email me, if you would like to inquire about taking lessons.
